To make up the disadvantage of MPEG-7 (Multimedia Content Description Interface) in the description of domain-specific multimedia semantic content, a description scheme with the support of ontology-based semantic indexing and retrieval is designed in this paper. The description scheme is built on the basis of the ABC core ontology. It combines MPEG-7 for the video structure part and RDF for the knowledge part of the multimedia description. Through defining the mapping methodology from MPEG-7 semantic Description Scheme to ABC ontology and providing a series of rules for the conversion from MPEG-7 XML (eXtensible Markup Language) (Schema) to RDF (Resource Description Framework) (Schema), the description scheme meets the requirements of domain specific multimedia semantic content. To verify the effectiveness of the description scheme, a prototype system named ViA is designed, which provides ontology-based semantic indexing capabilities and an appropriate API for semantic query.
